Melbourne Olympic Candidature

Melbourne Olympic Bid

When the city of Melbourne decided to bid for the 1996 Olympic Games, an intense, short-term communication programme was required as part of the bid formalities.

It seemed appropriate that in the Centenary year of the games that the Olympic flame and Olympic colours became the foundation of the bids brand identity and a broader visual language based on Olympic sports icons that would support it. These icons were reproduced in different formats, including large sculptures that were part of a much greater plan to decorate the entire city.

Hoardings around Melbourne’s major construction sites were used as promotional opportunities, while the freeway entrance to the city featured strong colour and symbolic statements related to the main theme of the bid identity.
