Any university campus is complex to negotiate, but few universities have the same luxury of space as Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia. The faculties have expansive facilities and extensive space contained within a cocoon of playing fields and parklands. The campus area is like a maze and the site has a number of entry points which can complicate simple directions. Basic communication was seen to be the most effective solution. A system of narrow totems was designed to accommodate concise messages. It was important to provide a signage system that was easily identified and accessible and which did not intrude on the landscape.
